A nice selection of wines to sample per usual, but the treat was the cake. Wow!

Kristy Stephens Ammann, owner of Soiree Cakery, was behind the counter cutting up heavenly slices of her signature lemon cake. A perfect concoction of sour and sweet, it would be perfect for weddings, showers, anniversaries… heck, for Thursdays. I think it was a Thursday.

The flavor harked back to the cakes my grandmothers made from scratch, a hint of lemon pudding cake, as rich as anything Julia Childs ever concocted. Light but packing that infusion of citrus to keep it real.

It’s also perfect to pair with champagne, so we took home a bottle of the Cavit after all!

Each of the four weeks of the month has a theme: “Visit a Farmers Market”, “Family to the Farm” (visit a farm stand or farm), “Share the Harvest” (providing food for those in need), and “Looking Ahead” (preserving and storing food for the winter).

New Hampshire residents and visitors alike are showing unprecedented interest in local food, and this month long celebration offers a great opportunity to feature New Hampshire grown foods. Visit www.nheatlocal.org for event and activity information.

Governor Lynch will be on hand at the Concord Farmers’ Market on Capitol Street on August 1st to launch both NH Eat Local Month and Farmers’ Market Week! A special kick off celebration will be held at 9 am. NH Commissioner of Agriculture, Lorraine Merrill will welcome Governor John Lynch and First Lady, Dr. Susan Lynch to the market, along with many other guests, farmers and shoppers.

The organizers are looking for events that celebrate local foods to put up on the NH Eat Local website. If you know of restaurants that are celebrating local foods with an event in August, email Gail McWilliam Jellie at the NH Dept. of Agriculture, Markets & Food at gmcwilliam@agr.state.nh.us.
